Clocks fall back Sunday, so Vancouver's drive home is dark and wet. Filmed rear glass and cameras hide the lane. See what to wipe tonight. Book a mobile detail.
Sunday, November 1, the clocks fall back across Metro Vancouver. You leave a Yaletown office, a Burnaby tower, or a Richmond parkade and the street is already dark. Rain has sat on the rear glass since the bridge. The backup camera is a grey smear. The side mirror is a blob of spray. The lane change on Highway 1, Knight Street, or Lions Gate still has to happen.
This guide stays on the glass behind you: the rear window, the outside of the side mirrors, and the camera lenses you use to park. Film on the windshield you look through is in our windshield guide. Cloudy headlamp lenses are a listed restoration service, in our headlight guide. Haze on the inside of the glass is in our cabin glass guide. A wet coat on the cloth seat is a different commute problem, in our cloth seat guide. Book a mobile detail and we will come to the driveway or the parkade.
Why the darker commute shows up behind you
Through much of October, many Lower Mainland drivers still reversed in some daylight. After the clocks change, a late afternoon leave from downtown, Burnaby, or Richmond is night. The rear of the car has been in spray all day. A closed Yaletown, downtown, or Richmond stall does not dry the hatch.
The windshield gets a blade. The rear glass often does not.
The windshield has a wiper on it for the whole drive. A sedan's rear window often has none. A hatch or SUV usually has one blade, and that blade smears filmed glass instead of clearing it. Highway 1 spray, Lions Gate mist, and a wet trip back from the North Shore sit there until someone wipes them. The front arc is a different job. This post is the glass behind you.
What collects on the rear glass
Rear glass sits in the wake of your tires and the vehicle ahead. It picks up a finer spray than the hood, and it stays wet longer. A slow evening on Highway 1 through the Fraser Valley, or a crawl across the Knight Street Bridge, gives that spray time to dry into a veil.
A grey veil you notice once the lights are on
In daylight a light film can look like clean wet glass. Under streetlights, brake lights bloom and a parking line can disappear. The film is often road spray and traffic oils. If the glass feels rough after a rinse, a dry towel can scratch it. Use a glass cleaner meant for cars and a clean microfiber. Check your owner's manual before any product, especially on tinted rear glass.
The rear wiper arc
Look at the rear wiper arc once the glass is lit. A clean blade on filmed glass still smears, and a torn blade chatters. We do not install wiper blades. Clean the glass first, then judge the rubber. A new blade on filmed glass will still smear. If the blade is stuck, leave the switch alone until the glass has warmed. Check your owner's manual before you lift the arm.
Defroster lines, and the mirror that shows them
Many rear windows have thin defroster lines. A razor or a rough pad can cut them. If the glass is frosted, start the rear defroster and wait. Skip hot water, and keep a scraper off the paint. The interior mirror reflects that rear glass, so a dirty hatch can look like a bad mirror. Wipe the outside first. Fog on the cabin side is the cabin haze visit.
Side mirrors and the backup camera
You use the mirrors at speed in the rain, and the camera when you nose into a stall you cannot see clearly.
Outside film on the mirror
Water beads on a clean mirror and runs off. A filmed mirror holds a sheet, and headlights turn that sheet into glare. Wipe the glass, the lower edge, and the housing. Leave the ridge, and spray wicks back on the next drive from Burnaby, Coquitlam, or a Richmond parkade. Greasy inside door glass is cabin haze. Wipe repeaters and rear light covers so they still show after dark. Moisture inside a lamp is a shop check. We do not repair lamps.
A blob in the middle of the picture
The backup camera sits low, often just above the plate, where tire spray lands. Sensors in the bumper sit in the same splash. After dark, the guide lines are on the screen and the curb is a smear. One wet commute can do that. A week of bridge spray makes it worse. Use a soft damp microfiber, then a dry one. Press lightly. Do not grind grit into the plastic.
What to keep off a lens
Skip magic erasers, toothpaste, and anything abrasive. Some of those can haze a plastic lens. Check your owner's manual before a chemical goes near a camera or a sensor. Do not flood the seam. If a careful wipe does not clear a blocked-camera message, stop. That can be a fault. We can clean a lens we can reach. We do not repair cameras, calibrate driver aids, or open the bumper.
| Zone | What you often see | What helps this week |
|---|---|---|
| Rear glass | A grey veil, blooming lights | Car glass cleaner. No razor on the lines |
| Rear wiper arc | A fan of streaks | Clean the glass, then judge the blade |
| Side mirrors | Glare, a ridge at the lower edge | Wipe the glass and the housing |
| Backup camera | A soft picture, or a warning | Damp microfiber, light pressure. Stop if it stays |
| Rear light covers | A dull lens from surface dirt | Wipe the cover. Moisture inside is a shop check |
What to wipe the same evening
You do not need a full detail after one rainy drive. You do want the lenses clear before the next dark leave. A North Vancouver hill, a Coquitlam street, and a downtown stall can use the same order. Keep wheel towels off the glass. Brake dust can scratch.
- •Look at the rear glass under a light. Daylight hides the veil.
- •Use a glass cleaner meant for cars. Check your owner's manual first, including on tint.
- •Wipe in straight passes, including the band a rear wiper would use.
- •Wipe each mirror, the lower edge, and the housing. Do not soak the motors.
- •One damp microfiber on the camera, then a dry one. Light pressure only.
- •Skip razors, steel wool, and magic erasers on glass, defroster lines, and lenses.
When a glass-focused visit is the right call
Book when the veil returns the same day, when the rear wiper chatters on glass you just cleaned, or when the camera stays soft after a careful wipe. One fresh spray that wiped clear can wait.
What the visit can include
An exterior detail can wash the paint and clean the rear window and the mirrors. If the cabin glass is hazed, the inside can be part of an interior visit. Steam cleaning, fabric shampoo, and leather conditioning do not clear a filmed hatch. Tell us if you are seeing a veil, mirror glare, or a soft backup picture. A warning that stays after a clean lens is a technician's job.
A coating helps rain sheet. It does not clear a camera.
A ceramic coating does not make glass immune to spray, and we do not coat a camera lens. The film still has to be cleaned off. As certified System X and Revivify installers, we can coat paint, glass, and wheels once they are clean. The System X Gold package includes Glass+ on the windows and windshield, plus Wheel+ on the face of the wheels. System X packages range from two to ten years of warranty coverage. Revivify graphene coating uses a flexible layer with a five-year warranty. Compare options on our ceramic coating page, or get a ceramic quote. Glass+ does not clear a yellowed headlamp.
Where we do the work
We come to the car. Our units are self-contained, with on-board power, compressed air, and purified water, so we do not need your hose or your electricity. That helps when you get home after dark and the car lives in a stall. Our condo parking guide covers fobs and height.
A simple darker-commute routine
Use this order on a wet week, and again after Sunday's earlier sunset. A White Rock driveway, a Surrey street, a Langley garage, or a Richmond parkade all count.
- 1.Before Sunday. Wipe the rear glass, both mirrors, and the backup camera.
- 2.On the drive. If the picture is a blob, pull up, wipe the lens, then reverse.
- 3.When you park. Look at the hatch under a light. Night shows the veil.
- 4.Wipe, do not scrape. Straight passes, and no metal on the defroster lines.
- 5.Mirrors and housings. Include the lower edge so spray does not wick back.
- 6.Judge the rear blade only after the glass is clean. We do not install blades.
- 7.Book the smear that returns. Say rear glass, mirrors, or camera.
